15 Most Important Things In Life

Most Important Things In Life

Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well - so the saying goes. The real problem is deciding what that is. What is worth doing? What is important in life? What do I dedicate myself to? How do I rank and order the things worth investing in by value?

These are the questions plaguing the minds of many on this roller coaster ride called life, we want to know the most important things in life for it is only in knowing them that we can work towards achieving them.

You'd think that a question so widely asked across generations would cease to be a problem but therein lies a major issue; because of how frequently it comes up, there are numerous and sometimes outrageous answers floating around about what exactly the most important things in life are, making it harder for the average confused man to lay hold of that which is correct.

Life is short, on this, we all agree - the matter of fact, it is the only thing common to any school of thought on the issue of what the most important things in life are. So yes, life is short and in the midst of daily toil and struggles it is quite common to lose sight of any meaning and fall into the trap of endless cycles of activity upon activity that only serves to leave one drained and empty. The solution to this is taking stock of one's life and value system.

There are a plethora of value systems available for the taking, ideologies waiting to be subscribed to, causes waiting to be taken up - many of these incompatible with each other. For believers, the value systems we can ascribe to are limited, but that limit simply makes some things incontrovertible and still leaves a whole lot to choose from; this is where this piece on “15 Most Important Things In Life” comes in.

There is much that seems good or rather normal by society's definition that is an antithesis to God's word and it can be a chore trying to filter out those things when doing a search about the important things in life. In light of this, this article will highlight 15 of what we consider to be the most important things in life that are in harmony with God's word and general will for mankind.

Nevertheless, before you get caught up in the whole quest for what is important in life, do well to remember that this life is not an end in itself and that there is that which we as Christians aspire towards, a hope we walk in daily; the promise of the resurrection and eternal life.

Whatever else we strive to achieve, whatever impact we hope to make, whatever longings we yearn to satisfy, this is the ultimate and all we do should serve to make our sojourn on earth beautiful and fruitful without endangering the achievement of this ultimate goal.

Also, it would do you a world of good to keep these words by John Piper in mind; “You don’t have to know a lot of things for your life to make a lasting difference in the world. But you do have to know the few great things that matter, perhaps just one, and then be willing to live for them and die for them”.

15 Most Important Things In Life

Most Important Things In Life

God:

The first on our list of most important things in life is God. God is where it all begins - the apriori position that makes it all possible. No person or group of persons can rise higher than their vision of who God is. This is because God is the highest ideal a man can aspire to. There are three questions that a man must answer about God, and which form part of the foundation for his life:

  • Does God exist?
  • What is he like?
  • How must I think about, and relate to him?

Faulty answers to any of these questions will necessarily affect how a man behaves, and where he ends up - for good or not. Regardless of how well you may deem your life to be going or how far you go in life, without God, there will always be a void.

Man was made in such a way that he yearns continually for the divine, that intimacy which no earthly pleasure or conquest can fill. This emptiness is what many have tried to fill for centuries with sex, alcohol, power, drugs and the like. However, none of these or any other mundane relationship can be substituted for it and will always be wrong answers to the question of what is important in life.

Jesus was not playing mind games when he said these words; “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). God is the ultimate when you have that part of your life fixed, all else falls in place.

Most Important Things In Life

Health:

Our body is part of who we are - the avatar of our physical presence. It is the part of us most intimately in contact with the physical world. Our bodies are pretty remarkable, but they fall apart really fast if we don't take care of them. Vigilant carefulness regarding our health helps us to stay functional for much longer.

Although man’s tenacity for overcoming minor and major health handicaps, as well as succeeding in leading productive lives with such handicaps has been proven over and over again across time, it is so much easier to live a life free of health concerns.

Good health is definitely in the A-list for most important things in life and the onus is on us to maintain it for a lifetime; as much as is possible.

We can also see in 3 John 1:2 (“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well”) that good health is something God desires for us.

Most Important Things In Life

Family:

Sometimes, it can be easy to forget how much family really means to us. I mean it’s hard living with someone else no matter how much we may like them or be attracted to them, and family sure knows how to rub one the wrong way more often than not.

The resulting frustrations can cloud our minds and distract us from how vital family is to us but in the end, they remain one of the most vital parts of our lives and one of the most important things in life.

A family is both biological and acquired; I'm talking via marriage. So if your biological family is screwed on a colossal scale (we have to acknowledge that sadly, not all family units are functional), you have a chance to experience its fullness in the home you build.

It is, however, without doubt, that family is not a wrong answer to the question of “what is important in life”.

Most Important Things In Life

Friendship:

Friendship… Now I'm not talking about those people you surround yourself with and hold random conversations with no substance, no. I'm talking about your Proverbs 17:17 friend (“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”), the Jonathan to your David (see 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 19:1-7 ).

“Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
-Aristotle

Friends, like family, are one of the most important things in life. Good friends are hard to come by, so when you find one, nurture that relationship and value it for the treasure that it is. Great friendships can become like family and more. Consider Proverbs 18:24 - “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Most Important Things In Life

Understanding Money:

Jesus famously said (Matthew 6:24) “you cannot serve God and money (profit) ”. Our drive for profit and gain is probably the single most dependable human trait and failure to acknowledge and understand, or worse, control it, is disastrous.

Want to know “what is important in life?”, understanding money and putting it in its right place. Funny right? One would think the acquisition of money would be what would make it to this list of the most important things in life but the reverse is the case.

Whilst it is important that one has a certain financial capability, it is more important than money is recognized as the means to an end that it is not an end in itself. A correct and sound understanding of money is what will make it impossible for one to be enslaved to it. In Plato’s words, “the greatest wealth is to live content with little.”

1 Timothy 6:10 gives us a rather beautiful rendition of what happens when we allow ourselves to be mastered by money; “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Most Important Things In Life

Education:

Education exposes us - or at least that's what it is supposed to do if done right - to the inner workings of greatly constructive, and horribly destructive ideas. Education here doesn't refer to mere academic schooling whether in a classroom or via online classes. We can learn the flexibility of mind that is necessary to identify and appreciate good ideas and repudiate horrible ideas in a manner that is convincing.

It hasn't been long since human societies moved to debate as the preferred means of hashing out differences - we usually just bashed each other till the stronger prevailed. Education provides the foundation for the training to fight out ideological wars on the theatre of debate instead of the battlefield. It is such self-development that helps us rise above our primal instincts and most base desires.

Study to show yourself approved. You know when they said, “what you don't know can't hurt you”? well, they lied… What you don't know can hurt you so bad or even end your life (remember Hosea 4:6), ignorance has always proven more costly than acquiring knowledge and wisdom.

Furthermore, knowledge attained through education helps to open doors to a lot of opportunities and the upside is that once you've learned a thing, nobody can take it away from you.

Most Important Things In Life

Integrity:

Proverbs 22:1 - “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”

Integrity as an important thing in life cannot be overemphasized, having integrity and a strong moral foundation maximizes trust with friends, spouses, co-workers, children and is basically important for human interaction on any level at all.

It is one of the bedrocks of functional relationships and you will find that without it, you will never be respected by other humans - people will generally be wary of you and avoid having anything to do with you as much as possible. This definitely makes it a must among the most important things in life.

Most Important Things In Life

Purpose And Goals:

Purpose as it is regarding your life's calling/mission i.e the medium through which you fulfill what I like to term our primary calling; i.e fellowshipping with God, being a disciple and ambassador and spreading the gospel and love of Christ.

(Click here 👉 how to find your calling from God)

A life with no mission can be a very hollow one, imagine running a race with no set course or endpoint... As Christians, our primary purpose as cited above forms the bedrock of every other plan, goal or vision. It is also imperative that we understand that our plans will keep being updated over the course of our lives, sort of like an operating system (OS) 😉.

Most Important Things In Life

Food:

I assure you that my love for food did not create a bias that made this get on the list of the most important things in life 😅. Food is very necessary for health and wholeness and if done right, can be an amazing source of peace and contentment.

Acts 27:34 - “Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.”

If food is not one of the most important things in life, then I don't know what is. Bear in mind that it is also an almost foolproof way to interact what others on the neutral ground.

Most Important Things In Life

Love:

1 Corinthians 13:13 - “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Love in all its forms is highly important in the grand scheme of things and whether we like to admit it or not, love is ultimately something that we all yearn to experience. We want to be loved; we desire it and feel the hurt deeply whenever it is denied us.

Love includes not just intimate relationships but also friends, family, all encounters with others and one's calling. It involves the things you enjoy doing, all the many varied expressions in day-to-day actions and even the random kind interactions with strangers.

It's true that these can all seem like unrelated things, but when it comes to the most important things in life, the little things tend to matter more than you realize they do. Experiencing love helps give life a sense of meaning and belonging.

Most Important Things In Life

Meta-cognition:

Learning our own minds, and learning how to think well is indispensable. Teaching our minds how to correctly process information, how to resist the temptations to mangle perception, and how to accurately articulate our thoughts is invaluable.

2 Corinthians 13:5 - “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?

Looking into the shadow in our hearts and recognizing the Auschwitz guard and the Gestapo lurking in there and honestly identifying the steps that could lead it is so invaluable. It is definitely one of the most important things in life to observe and understand the workings of your mind; man, know thyself.

Most Important Things In Life

Peace:

Peace is referred to like the concept of harmonious well-being and freedom from hostile aggression, better still it is a state of tranquility. There are few things in life more precious than peace of mind. In the absence of peace, there is minimal productivity and worse yet, it can lead to physiological breakdowns across various levels.

Thankfully, the kind of peace we have received as Christians is not one that hangs us out to dry in the presence of conflict, war or the various issues of life; far from it. We have received a peace unlike any the world has ever known.

John 14:27 - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

2 Corinthians 4:8‭-‬9 - “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

Philippians 4:7 - “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

If you've ever experienced worry, anxiety or ever had a panic attack, I'm sure you'll agree that peace of mind is definitely one of the most important things in life.

Most Important Things In Life

Self Confidence:

This is important because a healthy self-esteem is what births self-confidence. Self-confidence is an important factor in balancing life on all spheres, it is born of a positive evaluation of self-worth and can be all the difference between living a fulfilling life and being tossed around like a leaf by the wind.

One of the most important things in life is not just having self-confidence but also protecting it. Almost anything can be achieved when one believes in himself.

Most Important Things In Life

Respect:

Respect is one very essential part of human interactions and existence. It functions much like integrity and acts as a sort of unspoken way of communication, building strong relations between persons where mutual respect exists.

The bible covers respect in so many different forms, from respect for authority to interact with parents and relationships with our fellow man; see Hebrews 13:17, Exodus 20:12, Luke 6:38 and Matthew 7:12.

Most Important Things In Life

Balance:

Although this list of the most important things in life was written in no particular order, I have to admit that the first and last things on this list couldn't have been positioned any better.

Balance is one of the important things in life, for without it all else would be a jumble of chaos even if rightly present. For instance, one must learn to balance the necessity and joys of food with the trap of gluttony and obsession with it.

In the same vein, care must be taken to ensure that all of these things listed as being the important things in life are properly balanced, without one drowning out the other or all of life's other necessities.

Bottom line:

This balance also involves an understanding of the unintended consequences that come with every action, I like to call it the ripple effect. Picture this, you throw a stone into the water and while it sinks to the bottom, the ripples on the water's surface caused by the disturbance going on. Sinking the stone was your goal, the ripples were not part of the plan but they happened anyway - the same thing occurs every day with life. ''Think of it like the scientific law that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.''

Conclusion:

We're finally at the end of this list of the most important things in life and I believe that the question of “what is important in life?” has been duly answered and understood. I truly appreciate your getting to the end of this piece and I hope that your life only gets better from here onwards.

It is true that the answers to the question of what the important things in life are, are quite subjective and can differ on several levels across individuals but the most fundamental basics remain the same. It is in this light that we've listed the 15 things above as important things in life.

I hope you enjoyed this piece as you learned from it, do leave your comments below and don't be shy to return later and share with us how this may have changed your life in any way. Until next time, cheers!
