35 Bible Verses About Divorce

Bible Verses About Divorce

Hello, I would love to welcome you to another interesting episode that I have titled Bible Verses About Divorce. I personally took out time to spawn out this topic as I have derived from research that divorce is one of the key reasons for broken homes and strayed youths.

As you engage in reading this article your eyes of understanding will be enlightened and you will have insight as to what divorce is and what the bible says about divorce.

First, let's talk about divorce. The big question here is, ''does the Bible allow divorce''

It is very important to understand the implication of some actions. I know that different personalities would have different opinions on this very topic and that's why I have taken out time to write this bible verses about divorce and also talk briefly about divorce biblically.

Explaining divorce formally according to the Miriam Webster dictionary; Divorce is the action or an instance of legally dissolving a marriage.

Moving on,

Let's see what the bible says about divorce briefly.

The Bible has so much to say about divorce, causes of divorce and what God thinks about divorce. And I know you have so many questions about this, and reasons that could make you feel you should get a divorce. Some of this questions may be:

  • What if he is cheating on me
  • What if he hit me
  • What if he is flirting
  • What if he is drinking
  • What if my heart is broken
  • What if there is no more love, attention, and affection
  • What exactly is God saying about this?

We might not really dig deep on divorce in this article. but I will drop some answers, Bible Verses About Divorce, and an explanatory video that will also be of help.

I know fifty percent of humans out there will always seek divorce whenever there find their self in a difficult marital issue

But ask yourself this question, is it permitted for a Christian to get a divorce, is the Church ok with it

Now, before I give an answer to this., I have to acknowledge the fact that this is a very personal and emotional topic for some person, so I'm going to be as respectful as I can to those feelings.

Here Goes:

With the Bible verses listed below, I will like to let you know that God hates Divorce. I know that might sound harsh to you but it true. This is because God loves you (people) and reconciliation, but hates separation and brokenness.

The original will, intention, and desire of God to us are that in everything we do, we should always move towards restoration no matter the situation. (always forgive)

I'm not trying to say that divorce is so bad and sinful that God cannot forgive. But that living separately in a covenant marriage and the implication that it will reflect in our life, faith, families, and children all in the name of ''Divorce'' should be a good reason for a Christian to do everything possible to stay away and not making divorce an option any time.

That's why when His disciples asked Him how long can we forgive our offender? His reply was 70 times 70. Because he knew no one can really offend the other for this number of times.

That being said, let's literally dive right into our list of Bible Verses About Divorce.

Alright, here you have the long-awaited list of Bible Verses About Divorce. I'll be using the New International Version of the Bible (NIV).

1. Luke 16:18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

2. Jeremiah 3:1

“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers— would you now return to me? declares the Lord.

3. 1 Corinthians 7:10-13
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. 12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.

4. Romans 7:2-3
For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
Matthew 19:6-7 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”

6. Matthew 5:31-32

That would be detestable in the eyes of the Lord. Do not bring sin upon the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

14. Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Here you have our final list of Bible Verses About Divorce. I hope you have gotten a word for yourself.

35. Matthew 19:8-9 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

There you have it.

I like to end this by saying that God's will and desire for each and every one of us is that through His Son Jesus Christ we may experience restoration and be saved. So our desire for marriage as Christians should be the same thing, and not for us to quickly divorce our partner which eventually results in broken homes.

Therefore let's give it our best, aiming towards reconciliation because Jesus is full of Grace and unending love.

Finally, lean on what Jesus says in His word and not on our own understanding.
